Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Diversifying communications methods to enhance public awareness of natural disaster prevention and control, and ensuring accurate and timely forecast are among solutions to minimise damage caused by natural disasters, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang said while chairing a national conference on natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue in 2024 held in Hanoi on May 10.

Deputy PM Quang, who is Chairman of the National Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, noted that despite many kinds of natural disasters in 2023 and the first months of 2024, damage caused by the disasters has been reduced, showing the effective efforts of ministries, sectors and localities, especially stronger performance in forecasting, and the timely adjustments of regulations related to natural disaster prevention and control. - The Vietnamese Embassy in Italy on May 9 held a hybrid seminar highlighting the international values of the Dien Bien Phu Victory on the occasion of its 70th anniversary (May 7, 1954-2024).

- The European Union (EU) Delegation to Vietnam hosted a ceremony in Hanoi on May 9 to celebrate the Europe Day (May 9, 1950 - 2024).

- There is plenty of room for Vietnam and Malaysia to promote cooperation in such new areas as digital transformation, semiconductor, artificial intelligence, and electric vehicle (EV) production thanks to their supplementary strengths, according to Trade Counsellor to Malaysia Le Phu Cuong.

Vietnam has great advantages in high-quality human resources, while Malaysia is strong in electrical and electronic production and semiconductors but short of human resources due to limited population structure, Cuong told the Vietnam News Agency in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of Malaysia’s National Economic Forum 2024 on May 9. - Vietnam’s industry sector has seen continuous recovery with the index of industrial production (IIP) expanding 6.0% year on year in the first four months of this year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

In April alone, the IIP rose 0.8% over the previous month and 6.3% compared to the same period last year. Manufacturing-processing industry recorded the highest growth, with a year-on-year increase of 7% in April and 6.3% in the first four months of this year, the MoIT said. Read full story
