- The Organisation Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee held a national conference in Hanoi on December 16 to review the Party building and organisation work in 2024 and launch missions for next year.

Party General Secretary To Lam attended and delivered a speech at the hybrid event, which was co-chaired by Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Chairman of the Party Central Committee's Organisation Commission Le Minh Hung and his deputies. Read full story

- Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has approved a project to expand and establish new marine protected areas, fishery resource conservation zones and marine ecosystem restoration areas by 2030, aiming to increase the area of marine and coastal protected zones to 6% of Vietnam's natural marine area by 2030.

According to Decision No 1539/QD-TTg, the project aims to effectively manage and protect marine, coastal and island ecosystems, increase the area of marine protected zones and contribute to biodiversity conservation. Read full story

- With just days remaining in 2024, the Vietnamese economic landscape looks promising, with the GDP growth expected to exceed the set target of 7% thanks to concerted efforts by ministries and sectors, according to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Quoc Phuong.

Phuong said most international organisations have upgraded the country’s economic growth projections as compared to their previous predictions, adding his ministry’s economic scenario, reported to the Government in Quarter 3, suggests that without significant disruptions such as typhoons, floods and adverse global impacts, Vietnam has a solid foundation to obtain its 7% growth goal. - Based on statistics reported by localities, the Ministry of Construction projects that over 100,000 social housing units will be completed nationwide in 2025.

Additionally, the average housing area per capita across the country is expected to reach 27 square metres of floor space, and the national urbanisation rate is targeted to reach at least 45%, heard the ministry’s conference on December 14. Read full story

- The capital city’s per capita gross regional domestic product (GRDP) is expected to hit 45,000 - 46,000 USD while the urbanisation rate reach 80-85% by 2050, according to a newly-approved master plan for Hanoi in the 2021 - 2030 period with a vision to 2050.

Covering an area of 3,359.84 sq.km, the plan aims to transform Hanoi into a civilised and modern capital of time-honoured culture in borth short and long terms with "new opportunities and new values", helping the country herald a new era – that of the nation’s rise. Read full story

- The northern port city of Hai Phong disbursed about 13.5 trillion VND (531.6 million USD) of public investment capital in the first 11 months of this year, equal to 79.2% of the annual plan assigned by the Prime Minister and 64.2% of its own target, according to the Ministry of Finance.

With this result, Hai Phong ranks first among centrally-run cities in terms of public investment capital disbursement. Read full story

- Vietnamese students delivered exceptional performance and secured top honours at the 2024 UCMAS International Competition that took place in India from December 14-15.

The mental arithmetic intelligence contest drew 6,000 participants aged between 4 and 14 from 30 countries across the globe, with all of the 12 Vietnam students winning awards. Particularly, Le Nguyen Thuy Duong and Nguyen Chan Hung from Hanoi, and Chuong Gia Khanh from Ho Chi Minh City claimed the championship titles. Read full story

- The People’s Committee of District 10 in Ho Chi Minh City and the Chim Canh Cut Travel Service Joint Stock Company on December 14 launched an inter-district tourist tour named "Biet dong Sai Gon - Nhung can ham huyen thoai" (Saigon Special Forces - Legendary Tunnels."

"Biet dong Sai Gon" was a special force unit of the Vietnam People's Army that operated during the Vietnam War. Formed in the 1960s, this unit was known for its guerrilla tactics and urban warfare, particularly during the Tet Offensive and Uprising in the spring of 1968. Their operations included sabotage, intelligence gathering, and direct assaults against South Vietnamese and US forces, playing a crucial role in the reunification of Vietnam. Read full story

- The Vietnamese women’s national football team wrapped up 2024 by ranking 37th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, 6th in Asia, and 1st in Southeast Asia.

With 1,614.43 points, Vietnam gained 3.1 points since the last FIFA rankings update. The increase came from a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan and a 0-2 loss to China during a recent friendly tournament in China. Read full story./.
