Activities to mark 50 years of 1968 Offensive in HCM City

The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City held a reburial ceremony for remains of six martyrs who laid down their lives during the 1968 General Offensive and Uprising at Cu Chi district’s martyr cemetery.

HCM City (VNA) –The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City held a reburial ceremony for remainsof six martyrs who laid down their lives during the 1968 General Offensive andUprising at Cu Chi district’s martyr cemetery.

The remains were unearthedat the former base of Y4 front surgeon team in Binh My commune, Cu Chidistrict, Ho Chi Minh City.

The reburial service showedthe municipal Party Organisation, administration and people’s gratitude to and helpededucate young generations about the sacrifice of the martyrs for nationalliberation.

The general offensive anduprising began in the early morning of January 31 in 1968 when liberationforces simultaneously launched attacks on the enemy’s bases in cities such asHue, Da Nang, Quy Nhon and Sai Gon, and hundreds of towns from Quang Tri to CaMau.

The offensive helped theliberation forces destroy huge amounts of facilities and logistics used by theUS and the Southern regime’s armies.

People in rural areas alsotook this opportunity to rise up against the US-backed administration atcommune and district levels.

Sai Gon-Gia Dinh (now HCMCity), the headquarters of the US-backed Southern regime, was a focus of theoffensive.

Binh My commune in Cu Chidistrict was the place where liberation forces stationed before launchingattacks on important targets of the US forces and the US-backed Southernregime.

Nearly 300 soldiers, woundedsoldiers, doctors and nurses were killed when the US forces and the Southerngovernment bombed the front medical station based in the commune.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1968 General Offensive and Uprising, a book exhibition andexchange event themed “Memory of Mau Than Spring 1968” opened in Nguyen VanBinh book street in the city’s District 1.

People coming to the bookstreet from January 30 to February 4 will be offered a chance to visit a bookexhibition and a photo exhibition and participate in a talk on the offensive anduprising.-VNA
