Bangkok (VNA)⛎ – About 36 million people registered for Thailand’s digital wallet handout scheme via “Thang Rat” app from August 1 – September 15, which will see 10,000 THB (nearly 300 USD) to each person, the country’s finance ministry’s permanent secretary Lavaron Sangsnit has announced.
The number registered for the programme is much lower than the initially expected 45 million, potentially saving the government around 100 billion THB.
According to Lavaron, the ministry will not extend the registration period, as eligible individuals have already had six weeks to register.
The 10,000-THB digital wallet initiative was a key policy of the Pheu Thai Party after the May 2023 election. Initially, the government aimed to distribute 10,000 THB to approximately 50 million Thai citizens aged 16 and older to stimulate the economy. However, the programme faced funding challenges and delays.
Despite concerns following the dismissal of Prime Minister Srettha on August 14, the new government led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra remains committed to the programme, with some adjustments. For instance, certain groups may receive cash instead of digital money.
Around 14.5 million people, including state welfare cardholders and those with disability cards, will receive funds starting September 20. The government will determine a timeline for others who registered but do not belong to these groups.
The government has allocated the necessary budget for the programme through 2025, with 186 billion THB earmarked for next year. Officials expect the programme to boost income distribution, spending, and digital innovation across Thailand./.
The Thai government is expected to distribute 145 billion THB (4.28 billion USD) in cash under its digital wallet handout programme from late September to stimulate short-term development and support vulnerable groups.
Thai citizens can register to receive a digital wallet with a value of 10,000 THB (approximately 282 USD) starting August 1 under a scheme announced by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's government.
Eligible recipients for the 10,000-THB digital wallet handout scheme can start registering from August 1, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on July 15.
