700 poor households in Bac Lieu province receive new homes

Bac Lieu (VNA) – A total of 700 new houses we🌼re handed over to poor and near-poor households in the southern province of Bac Lieu at a ceremony jointly held by the Ministry of Public Security and local authoritie✤s on May 22.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Public Security Lt. Gen. Nguyen Ngoc Lam said that in recent years, the ministry has spearheaded fundraising campaigns and collaborated with localities to build more than 28,600 homes, along with numerous schools and educational facilities, at a total cost of over 1.4 trillion VND (about 53.8 million USD).
Since the beginning of this year, the ministry has mobilised the police force to contribute a day’s salary, raising 362 billion VND to support the Government’s programme to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated houses in Cao Bang and Gia Lai provinces. An additional 280 billion VND has also been mobilised to construct more than 4,400 homes for poor households, policy beneficiaries, revolutionary contributors, and ethnic minority communities nationwide.
In Bac Lieu, the ministry completed 700 houses, meeting both quality standards and construction timelines.
Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Pham Van Thieu noted that in response to the nationwide campaign "Joining hands to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated houses," Bac Lieu developed an action plan and formed a steering committee to mobilise resources, to eliminate substandard houses by the end of 2025.
The province has identified 2,537 households in need of new homes or repairs, with the required budget estimated at over 146 billion VND.
Thieu encouraged new homeowners to quickly stabilise their lives, increase agricultural production, and improve their household incomes to sustainably escape poverty.
To date, Bac Lieu has completed 1,758 out of the 2,537 planned houses. The remaining 779 homes are expected to be completed by July 1./.
Four more provinces have announced the completion of efforts to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated housing, bringing the total number of localities achieving this milestone to 19 out of 63 nationwide, according to the Ministry of Ethnic and Religious Affairs.
As of May 13, An Giang broke ground on 2,957 homes under this programme, including 2,453 new constructions and 465 renovations. The province has already completed and delivered 2,482 homes to residents. As much as 215.5 billion VND (8.3 million USD) has been mobilised for the efforts.
The ministry has worked with central and local agencies to implement a nationwide programme to replace substandard housing for policy beneficiaries, people with meritorious services, poor households, and those affected by natural disasters and climate change.
