Jakarta (VNA) - A 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Papua Barat, eastern Indonesia in themorning of December 28, but no tsunami warning was issued.

According to theMeteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia, the quakehappened at 10:03 am (local time) with an epicentre in southeast Manokwari at adepth of 26km.

The spokesperson of Indonesia’sNational Agency for Disaster Mitigation said that no damage or casualty hasbeen reported.

The December 28 quake happened when Indonesia is striving to overcomeconsequences of a tsunami disaster that hit Sunda Strait, Anyer Beach and SouthLampung of Indonesia’s Banten and Lampung provinces on December 22 following avolcanic eruption, which claimed over 370 lives.

In late September this year, earthquakes and subsequent tsunami that hitIndonesia’s Central Sulawesi killed nearly 2,000 people and left 5,000 missing,while forcing more than 9,000 others to leave their house.

Indonesia, one of themost disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the so-called Pacific"Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and a large portion ofthe world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. -VNA
