250 former Thai lawmakers indicted of acting unconstitutionally

Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) on February 24 charged 250 former members of parliament, most of them from the Puea Thai Party, with finding ways to amend the Constitution.

The decision comes less than a month after former Prime MinisterYingluck Shinawatra was banned from politics for five years by thelegislature.

Wicha Mahakun, a member of theNACC, said that his body found the 250 former MPs guilty of actingunconstitutionally and dishonestly and will forward the case to theNational Legislative Assembly (NLA).

They have to face a five-year ban from politics if also found guilty by the NLA.

Of the former lawmakers charged by the NACC, 223 are from the Puea Thai Party.

The case concerns a 2013 proposal by lawmakers from Yingluck's PueaThai Party to amend the constitution and enlarge the upper house Senateby making it a fully elected body.-VNA
