As many as 25 out of 28 northern localities reported positive annual growth in industrial production in the first four months of 2024, heard the 10th meeting of industry and trade sectors from 28 northern cities and provinces in Hanoi on May 17.

Hanoi (VNA) –♛ As many as 25 out of 28 northern localities reported positive annual growth in industrial production in the first four months of 2024, heard a meeting in Hanoi on May 17.
The meeting of the industry and trade sectors of the cities and provinces was jointly held by the Hanoi People’s Committee and the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).
Among the localities, 11 achieved a growth rate of 10% or higher. Such industrial hubs as Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Hai Phong, and Hanoi regained strong industrial growth momentum.

In the period, the total retail sales of goods and services revenue in the region reached over 1.4 quadrillion VND (58.3 billion USD), representing a 12.3% year-on-year increase.
Additionally, its export turnover jumped by 18.3%, reaching an impressive figure of 120.7 billion USD. Among the standout performers in this regard, the port city of Hai Phong reported 16 billion USD, marking a 21% rise. Thai Nguyen province saw a 14.7% expansion to 17.8 billion USD, and Bac Giang province 16.5 billion USD, up 22%.
Last year, the combined retail sales of goods and services revenue stood at 2.6 quadrillion VND, up 16.7% from 2022, higher than the national average of 9.6%. Meanwhile, the region’s export value was 221.5 billion USD, a year-on-year rise of 1.7%.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said since the previous meeting, held in Quang Ninh province last year, the localities have paid more heed to connectivity, especially in the sharing of information about State management, industrial production and trade.

Tran Thi Phuong Lan, Acting Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, pointed to limitations in the building and implementation of priority industry programmes, smart factories and green industry in some localities, along with stagnation in investment in technical infrastructure in industrial clusters.
Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of the Hai Phong municipal Department of Industry and Trade, said legal documents relating to the management of industrial clusters remain overlapping and contentious.
Delegates at the event discussed various policies and solutions aimed at further enhancing the economic landscape. Key topics included improving the business environment, competitiveness, and regional connectivity through effective State management, planning and zoning.
The focus was on developing industrial production, particularly in priority industries that capitalize on local advantages. There was a call for pooling public investment in industrial and trade infrastructure, increasing training on global economic integration, and maximising the benefits of signed free trade agreements.
Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Le Hong Son suggested the departments of industry and trade of the localities continue with the implementation of the sector’s restructuring project by 2030, thus improving its productivity, quality, added value and competitiveness.
He also called for greater efforts in economic restructuring, toward the green economy and the circular economy, in order to harmoniously address relations between growth and economic development, and the efficient use of natural resources and environmental protection.
The MoIT representatives pledged to stepped up administrative reform and work harder to facilitate production and business./.
