Phnom Penh (VNA)🌠 – About 2.5 million Cambodians are facing water shortages in the worst drought in a century, Vice President of the National Centre for Disaster Management Nhim Vanda said on May 5.
The official said that 80 percent of those drought-affected people in nearly 100 districts across Cambodia have been supplied water after a large-scale water distribution campaign announced by Prime Minister Hun Sen on April 26.
The temperatures in some parts of the country have climbed to 42 degree Celsius , he added.
Over 300 buffalos and cows in northeastern Stung Treng province and about 65 tonnes of fish in Tonle Sap lake in central Kampong Thom province have died of drought and heat waves.
On the same day, Prime Minister Hun Sen reiterated his request to authorities, armed forces and charitable organisations to continue distributing water to drought-stricken people.
It is forecast drought will continue in the country until July due to the impacts of El Nino.-VNA
