- The 17thVietnam Poetry Day officially opened on February 17 in Hanoi, featuring a widerange of activities.

The Vietnam Poetry Day, from February 16-21 in Hanoi capital city, Quang Ninhand Bac Giang provinces, is being held along with the 4th InternationalConference on Vietnamese literature promotion and the 2nd International PoemFestival. The events attracted the participation of nearly 200 writers, poetsand translators from many countries worldwide.

Within the framework of the events, manyexchanges between Vietnamese poem lovers and foreign poets, and exhibitions onlife and career of great poets have been arranged.

Poet Huu Thinh, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association (VWA) said that thePoetry Day is expected to contribute to promoting friendship among countries.

He highlighted innovation in poetry and literature activities in Vietnam.

The VWA has established a translation centre,which is building a long-term plan for translating Vietnam’s literary andpoetry works into English as an intermediary to translate other languages.

Since its debut on Nguyen Tieu (the 15th day ofthe first lunar month) in 2003, the Vietnam Poetry Day, the biggest poetry festivalin the country, has become a national tradition, taking place in the spring ofeach year. 

Starting out as an initiative of the VietnamWriters' Association, the Poetry Day has been organised in many provinces andcities to honour poetry, which has been an integral part of Vietnamese culturefor thousands of years. –VNA

♓ Vietnamese culture takes centre stage in Korean city

𓂃 Vietnam re-elected to 2005 UNESCO Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee

This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. The outcome shows the trust and recognition that member states have given Vietnam for its efforts and achievements in carrying out and promoting the Convention, as well as for its active role, strong standing, and growing credibility at UNESCO.
